When the Pen First Whispered

Updated: Oct 3
Every story has a quiet beginning… mine began with a whisper.
Long before websites and logos, before the idea of “Pen and Purpose Studio” came into being, there was a girl with a pen and a restless longing to write. I first heard the whisper in the early 90s—around 1993 or 1994—when I enrolled in my very first writing course: Writing for Children and Teenagers.
It felt like stepping into a dream.
I remember the joy of those first rhyming poems, the ones that danced in my notebook like fireflies on a summer night. I wrote from instinct, from emotion, from a quiet place that felt like home. And then... I paused.
Life called me in another direction.
I returned to full-time work and later pursued a career in Medical Technology at the University of Technology, Jamaica. For years, I poured myself into the laboratory—into microscopes and test tubes and the science of helping others. But the pen kept whispering.
It never left me. It only waited.
As the years passed, I began to feel the silence growing louder. The part of me that craved expression, that longed to tell stories and inspire hearts, couldn’t be ignored. So I returned to my first love: writing.
And here I am—at the beginning again, but wiser, clearer, and filled with purpose.
